In 2024, Scanlog was the first in the logistics industry to sell a biofuel with a 100% reduction in greenhouse gases via so-called Maritime Carbon Insets. Now, we continue our journey towards a fossil-free future by launching Fossil-Free Air Freight with an entirely new setup.
Scanlog offers all customers the opportunity to fly fossil-free by purchasing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via so-called insets. Insets mean the unique ownership right to an indirect emission reduction within the value chain through the Book & Claim mechanism. This means that Scanlog can deliver SAF for all air transports, not just those linked to a specific supplier or airline.
Scanlog began selling SAF to its customers in 2023 but has now further developed the service to meet higher quality standards and be even more competitive.
- We have developed a very cost-effective solution where cargo owners pay the market price for the fuel, and Scanlog does not charge anything extra. For example, buying SAF from us costs about 350 EUR for 250 kg to fly from Stockholm to New York,” says Matilda Jarbin, Chief Sustainability & Communications Officer at Scanlog.
All raw materials for the SAF that Scanlog buys are ISCC-certified and approved as “Advanced biofuel” according to Annex 9 of the EU’s RED II directive. The SAF Scanlog buys reduces emissions by at least 80%. Cargo owners can choose to buy SAF corresponding to any amount, for example, a 50% emission reduction and even 100% by purchasing more than their actual emissions.
- Aviation is very important for the transport sector, but it is also the mode of transport that emits the most greenhouse gases per unit, so it is really time for us, together with customers and suppliers, to take a strong step to reduce emissions, says Matilda Jarbin, Chief Sustainability & Communications Officer at Scanlog.
