Bergstrands Kafferosteri chooses Scanlog for fossil-free transports

Bergstrands Kafferosteri and Scanlog enter into a new collaboration from fall 2024. Scanlog will transport all green coffee beans from South America and Africa to Sweden on behalf of Bergstrands.

Bergstrands Kafferosteri is one of the oldest coffee roasters in Sweden. The company is family-owned and since 1891, all coffee knowledge and family recipes have been passed down through five generations. To this day, Bergstrands Kafferosteri honors and respects the old traditional ways of handling and roasting coffee beans. At the same time, they are constantly striving to find exciting new origins, improve techniques, focus more on sustainability and refine their coffee blends.

“Bergman&Bergstrands is a customer who has been passionate about their coffee production since 1891 and where the fifth generation, who runs the business, share our view of sustainability and long-term collaborations. We really love our coffee customers!”, says Myriam Nyström, Commercial Director Sea Freight Solutions, Scanlog.

Through Scanlog, Bergstrand’s coffee roastery secures 100 percent fossil-free sea transport, an action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions from their sea transport to zero. The biofuel that Scanlog offers is liquefied biogas (LBG) which is produced from manure – hence a 100% reduction of greenhouse gases. Bergstrands pays for LBG, which covers the company’s transports of green coffee beans from the country of origin. The LBG is bunkered into ships in northern Europe according to the mass balance principle.

In February earlier this year, Scanlog was the first in the world to sell a biofuel with 100% reduction of greenhouse gases via so-called insets. Insets is a methodology that enables scaling up the use of fossil-free fuel. Many companies have shown great interest since the launch, not least in the food sector.

Bergstrand’s coffee roastery has a strong focus on sustainability. When the dialogue with Scanlog began earlier this year, it was a crucial factor to continue the collaboration in the coming years as well.

It is incredibly fun and important that we do this collaboration together. When Scanlog introduced the option of choosing fossil-free sea transport, it was obvious to us. We see that climate change is the biggest threat to coffee. If we want to continue drinking high-quality coffee, we must start acting now. Our passion for coffee never cools down ”, says Emil Myrén, 5th generation Purchasing Agent.
